Photos of: Burning of the Chometz

April 8, 2009 was a historical day at Oceanside Jewish Center and the rest of the world. It was an unusual cold and windy day for early April. The official weather for the  beginning of our services ( 6:30 AM) -- 6:05 AM  -  Partly Cloudy and Windy 37°F - WSW 21mph, according to weather.com. handed out with the proper prayers for this unique outdoor service.  We stood outside, facing east looking over the rooves of houses in Oceanside. Prayers could not be said untill the sun was seen. Once the Rabbi determined the sun was visiable, the prayers were recited by the everyone.

When the prayers were done, the congregation headed inside the warm Chapel. People put on their Tefillen and Tallit. Morning prayers said. It was Fast of the First Born, Siyyum. The Rabbi Greenspan handed out and discussed, the new Haggadah, he translated and analyzed for the year. The morning services ended up with a celebration of what we have studied and this day. We had our last Chometz food of the day, bagels, cream cheese and orange juice. Later that day, we had the burning of the Chometz as you will see below. It was a memorable day for everyone. 28 years from now we shall meet again for Birkat Hachamah but next year we will continue to burn our Chometz. Thanks to the Oceanside Volunteer Fire Department for providing professional supervision with our Chometz burning assisted by their Jewish Chaplain, Rabbi Greenspan.
