A Multi-Generational Progam at
OJC
OJC students learned first hand the experience
of European immigrants to the United States from the 1700-1930's.
Allotment of funds enabled the students to buy either a first class ticket
or to save on a ticket in steerage. Throughout the experience students
visited ten stations included passport and visa application and approval,
baggage approval, the boat trip, naturalization process as well as a
swearing in ceremony. Students were also expected to go through a "medical
exam" to determine their fitness to immigrate. Stations were staffed by
OJC volunteers from all parts of synagogue life affording our students an
oppportunity to benefit from their knowledge and experience. Thank you to
all who participated.
